Time-sensitive care

Emergency contraception deserves prompt attention.

If you are seeking emergency contraception after unprotected sex or a contraceptive concern, please seek prompt evaluation. A virtual consultation can help determine whether this setting is appropriate and discuss next steps without delay.

1. Clinical evaluation

The visit starts with the details that matter.

The clinician reviews timing, medical history, current medications, pregnancy possibility, and other relevant factors. This is not a self-triage tool, and the consultation does not guarantee that a prescription or particular treatment will be appropriate.

2. Evidence-based options

FDA-approved medications are the focus.

Emergency contraception options may include FDA-approved levonorgestrel products available without a prescription and prescription ulipristal acetate when clinically appropriate. The practice prioritizes FDA-approved brand-name or generic medications over compounded medications.

3. Local pharmacy, when appropriate

A prescription may be sent where you choose.

If a prescription is clinically appropriate, it is sent to your chosen local pharmacy. Medication availability, pharmacy fulfillment, delivery timing, and treatment outcomes cannot be promised.

Important boundary

Emergency contraception is not abortion care and does not interrupt an established pregnancy. It is not a substitute for urgent evaluation of severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, concern for assault, or other emergency symptoms. For those concerns, call 911, visit an emergency department, contact 988 for immediate crisis support when needed, or seek other appropriate in-person care now.

Everyday contraception

A method should fit the person, not a chart.

Choosing contraception involves more than a simple hormone-dose comparison. Your health history, preferences, future pregnancy plans, bleeding pattern, daily routine, and access to follow-up all inform an individualized discussion.

Combined estrogen and progestin

Methods with two hormones

Pills, patches, and vaginal rings may be discussed. Whether estrogen-containing care is suitable requires individualized review.

Progestin-only

Methods without estrogen

Progestin-only pills and longer-acting options may be discussed in light of your history and preferences. Some require in-person placement or administration.

Nonhormonal

Methods without hormonal medication

Barrier methods, fertility awareness, copper IUDs, and permanent contraception may be relevant. Suitability and access vary, and some require in-person care.

The broader conversation

Contraception can be part of care for more than pregnancy prevention.

Possible therapeutic considerations

Contraception may also be considered in discussions about menstrual symptoms, bleeding, acne, or cycle-related concerns. This is individualized, not a promise of treatment.

A virtual visit has limits

The clinician may recommend an in-person exam, testing, imaging, specialist care, or another setting when safer or more appropriate. Diagnosis, testing, treatment, and prescriptions are not guaranteed through a virtual visit.
